How to play Roulette?

All roulette games require a wheel and a table. Both the roulette wheel and table contain 36 numbers and a 0. (On some American tables, the wheel and table also have a 00.) A dealer sends a small white ball spinning that will eventually land on 1 of the wheel’s numbered slots. Place your desired bet on the table, correlating with the slot on the wheel that you think the ball will land in. If you predict the slot correctly, you get paid. In addition to numbers, roulette tables offer a few other betting options including:[1]

  • 1-18

  • 19-36

  • Even

  • Odd

  • Black

  • Red

  • 1st 12 (which counts as a bet for all numbers 1-12)

  • 2nd 12 (which counts as a bet for all numbers 13-24)

  • 3rd 12 (which counts as a bet for all numbers 25-36)

Learn the different "inside" bets

You win at roulette by correctly betting on the number or type of pocket in which the ivory ball lands. Placing an "inside" bet (a bet on specific numbers as opposed to a large group of numbers) offers lower chances of winning, but generally has higher paying odds. Types of inside bets include:

  • Straight up betting

on 1 number (which pays 35 to 1)

  • Split betting

on 2 numbers (which pays 17 to 1)

  • Street betting

on 3 numbers (which pays 11 to 1)

  • Corner betting

on 4 numbers (which pays 8 to 1)

  • 6-line betting

on 6 numbers (which pays 5 to 1)

  • To place a 3-number bet with just 1 chip, place the chip on the end of any "street" (row of 3 numbers) on the table map.

  • To place a 6-line bet with just 1 chip, place the chip on the edge of 2 adjoining streets.

  • American roulette also offers the 5-number bet which covers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3 (and pays 6 to 1) as well as the Row 00 bet which covers 0 and 00 (and pays 17 to 1).

Memorize the different "outside" bets

Outside bets do not involve specific numbers, but large groups of numbers like evens & odds, highs & lows, and reds & blacks. To place an “outside” bet, place your chip on the table on the outside of the number map. While making an “outside” bet offers lower paying odds, your likelihood of winning is much higher. “Outside” bets include:

  • Color betting

red or black (which pays 1 to 1)

  • Even or odd betting

    (which pays 1 to 1)

  • Column betting

on 12 numbers in a column (which pays 2 to 1)

  • Dozen betting

    (1st 12, 2nd 12, etc.) (which pays 2 to 1)

  • High or low bets

    (1-18, 19-36) (which pay 1 to 1)

What is the house edge and how does it affect your odds when playing roulette?

Know that at every roulette table (and at every game in the casino itself), the “house” (the casino) always has an edge. The house’s advantage when playing roulette comes from its additional number 0 (which offers the house an additional 2.7% chance of winning, compared to the players).

Where did Roulette come from?

The 18th-century French mathematician and inventor Blaise Pascal created the “little wheel,” or roulette when he was working on a perpetual motion system. Despite its failure, Pascal’s machine served as the model for the roulette wheel. The game that was originally played in casinos in Paris in the late 1700s is very similar to the form of roulette that is played today. It had two zeros: a single zero (0) and a double zero (00), both of which are still seen in the game’s American adaptation.

There are two main variants of roulette: European and American. The American edition has a double zero in addition to the single zero found in the European version. Because of its reduced house edge, players often believe the European version to be more favourable. The roulette wheel is typically divided into 37 (in European) or 38 (in American) numbered pockets, coloured alternately in red and black. The single zero (or double zero) is green. The numbers on the wheel range from 1 to 36 and the order of the numbers is designed to maximize randomness.

How is the Roulette dealer involved?

Another term for a roulette dealer is a “croupier.” The term “croupier,” which originally referred to the person who stood behind a gambler with their cash reserves, is also used to refer to any employee of a casino who runs a gambling table.

Over the years, numerous betting strategies and systems have been developed to try to gain an edge in roulette. Some of the most famous strategies include the Martingale, Fibonacci, and the James Bond strategy. However, it’s essential to understand that roulette is fundamentally a game of chance, and no strategy can guarantee consistent wins. This approach to lore has even infiltrated roulette dealers, who use signals rather than words to communicate to the player, although importantly, it is never used to cheat.

With the rise of online casinos, roulette has become more accessible than ever. Online versions of the game offer various features and variations, allowing players to enjoy roulette from the comfort of their own homes. Live dealer editions of roulette allow the player a more immersive roulette experience in their own home, complete with a live roulette dealer.

The Difference Between Live Roulette dealer and Traditional Roulette dealer

On a traditional roulette table, the dealer isn’t just responsible for spinning the wheel, but also for overseeing the bets as they are placed and then collecting the bets at the end of the spin to calculate and pay out any winnings.

A live roulette dealer does not have to manage player bets in the same way. The technology that powers live roulette games handles all betting and cashier functions automatically. Players buy chips and place bets through the user interface, which requires no input from the dealer.

However, a live roulette dealer must perfectly understand the different stages of the game and should issue reminders to players about when betting can begin and when it ends. While players will receive digital reminders of these through their interface, dealers should remind them too, as this works to heighten the sense of immersion and increase engagement between player and dealer.

Finally, live roulette dealers must be engaging and entertaining. Roulette should be fun, so dealers should be enthusiastic and passionate at all times to ensure players have the best possible experience.

The Social Element of Live Roulette

Roulette is one of the world’s most well-known and popular casino games. It’s a mainstay on casino floors the world over and is equally widespread in today’s booming online gambling scene. However, while the game’s easy-to-understand rules and iconic spinning wheel have proved instrumental in its success, the social element of roulette has also played a major role. While players come to casinos to enjoy their favourite games, they also come to socialise and connect with fellow guests and players. In the past, it wasn’t easy to meet the social needs of players with online casino services. However, this is all changing with the power of modern technology.

Is Roulette a Social Game?

We might not think of casino games as being particularly sociable. They are not team-based like certain sports, and the financial incentive may lead people to believe that casino games are extremely intense and competitive. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, casinos are incredibly sociable places. These late-night venues are abuzz with excitement, many guests visit casinos for the atmosphere more than for the games on offer. The games themselves can be social too. In most table games other than poker, players are playing against the house rather than each other. This can create a sense of camaraderie and togetherness and will give players a real emotional connection to the game they are playing. The wheel is perhaps the most social element of roulette. All players gather around to watch the wheel as it spins, and the outcome will affect everyone at the table. Another social element of roulette is the fact that all bets are made publicly.

Why is Socialisation Important?

Humans are social animals. We crave interaction with one another and seek out groups and communities to get involved with. Interacting and socialising with other people can help us regulate stress and anxiety and can even improve our memory and protect against neurodegenerative diseases. Unlike other casino games, the social element of roulette can promote a sense of teamwork and togetherness. While the game is played individually, the openness of the bets and the collective use of the wheel can make players feel as if they are playing together to beat the house. The social element of roulette is one of the main reasons why the game has been so popular for so long. However, initial digital recreations of the game lacked the social element, they were single-player games with no opportunities for real-life interaction. This has all changed with modern technology.

Live Dealer Roulette

Live dealer games have been a revelation for the online gambler. They offer all the benefits of convenience and accessibility that we have come to expect from digital gambling games, while they have not lost touch with the social elements that have made these games so popular to begin with. In live dealer roulette, a real-life croupier operates a physical roulette wheel. They are filmed by multiple cameras and streamed to a network of live players around the world. Players can place bets and watch the game unfold from the comfort of their homes. What live dealer games do is address the issues present in purely digital emulations of casino games. In roulette, rather than seeing a computer-generated spinning wheel, players will instead get to watch the real thing on their screens and enjoy the sight of a real croupier collecting the bets and spinning the ball.

Chat Features

Much of the social element of roulette comes from players chatting amongst themselves and with the dealer. To replicate this, live dealer roulette games come with an in-built chat feature that allows players to speak to one another and deliver messages to the croupier. This is a key feature that truly elevates the live dealer roulette game. Rather than being a faceless, emotionless experience, the chat feature allows players to build real connections and can foster a community around the game that will keep players coming back again and again.
